Gu Jiao and the Emperor had altered their appearances with makeup, so even though they weren’t wearing human-skin masks, their faces were still two unfamiliar visages.

Gu Chengfeng sat comfortably in a chair, drinking tea and enjoying pastries, while the Emperor stood respectfully behind him, the corners of his mouth twitching in frustration.

Glaring at Gu Chengfeng’s smugly exposed back of the head, the Emperor felt a burning urge to slap him hard!

After ruling as Emperor for so many years, who would have thought there would come a day when he had to disguise himself as a lowly eunuch?

Gu Jiao gave him a meaningful look, silently correcting him—no, not just a eunuch, an old eunuch.

The Emperor felt as though ten thousand arrows had pierced his heart!

He finally understood how difficult it was to be a eunuch. After standing hunched over for only two quarters of an hour, his aging back was already on the verge of collapse.

Fortunately, heaven favored the diligent, and the fake Emperor had finally finished court.

Li Sande went to greet him, bowing and reporting that the Crown Prince had come to express his gratitude and was currently waiting in the side hall.

The fake Emperor maintained a stern expression and nodded. “Zhen understands. Instruct the imperial kitchen to prepare a meal; Crown Prince will dine here in Zhonghe Hall at noon.”

Hearing his seamless performance, Gu Jiao and Gu Chengfeng nearly forgot for a moment who was real and who was fake.

The Emperor gritted his teeth. “Zhen is the real one!”

The fake Emperor entered the side hall.

Following closely behind him was Eunuch Yu, the newly promoted palace attendant.

Upon seeing the Crown Prince’s bruised and swollen face, Eunuch Yu was momentarily taken aback. “Your Highness, what happened to you…?”

Gu Chengfeng sighed and said, “Don’t even mention it. I encountered a group of assassins last night. Fortunately, I escaped unharmed. Today, I have come specifically to pay my respects to imperial father.”

As he spoke, he clasped his hands together in salute and bowed to the fake Emperor. “Son greets imperial father.”

This was the proper etiquette of the State of Yan, something Shangguan Yan had spent half a day teaching him.

The fake Emperor, naturally exuding authority, nodded slightly. “Yu Changbo, go summon Imperial Physician Liang to examine the Crown Prince.”

“Yes.” Eunuch Yu turned and left, while Li Sande and several eunuchs of Zhonghe Hall remained behind to serve cautiously.

“Imperial father.” Gu Chengfeng addressed the fake Emperor. “This son has come today with an important matter to report. Asking imperial father to dismiss everyone else.”

The fake Emperor nodded and instructed Li Sande and the others, “You may all withdraw.”

Gu Jiao also acted as though she and the Emperor were retreating.

However, Gu Chengfeng called out to the Emperor, “Eunuch Luo, you stay. You are an important witness, and there are matters you must personally report to imperial father.”

And just like that, the Emperor was openly left behind in the side hall.

Outside, Gu Jiao stood guard, making sure to shut the door. Li Sande chuckled and asked, “What’s your name? I haven’t seen you before, yet you seem somewhat familiar.”

Gu Jiao curled her lips into a slight smile. “Eunuch Li has keen eyes.”

Li Sande was momentarily stunned.

Inside the side hall, the fake Emperor looked at Gu Chengfeng and said, “Qi’er, what matter do you wish to report to Zhen?”

The mere sound of “Qi’er” made Gu Chengfeng’s skin crawl, sending chills down his spine.

The Emperor, his expression cold and full of fury, glared at the counterfeit before him and suddenly barked, “Insolent traitor! Kneel before Zhen at once!”

The aura of imperial authority erupted like a storm, reverberating in all directions. It was the very presence of a true sovereign, just like a dragon’s roar or a tiger’s might!

The fake Emperor was instantly dumbfounded!

Outside the hall, Li Sande stared wide-eyed at Gu Jiao in shock. “You… you… You are… Xiao, Lord Xiao?”

Gu Jiao only had two voice registers—her natural female voice and a male juvenile’s voice.

Hearing this familiar youthful voice, Li Sande immediately recognized her as the once “Xiao Liulang.”

He glanced at Gu Jiao, then at the tightly shut doors of the side hall. Xiao Liulang was from the Duke An Estate and was also a trusted aide of the Third Princess, Shangguan Yan. How did he end up entangled with the Crown Prince?

Before he could make sense of it all, the sounds of fighting suddenly erupted from within the hall.

Li Sande instinctively moved to rush inside to protect the Emperor.

Gu Jiao grabbed him by the arm. “Eunuch Li, it’s been a long time. Let’s catch up first; no need to be in such a hurry.”

“You… you all…”

“Impudent!”

Before Li Sande could finish his sentence, a sharp and commanding voice rang out from a distance; it was Han shi’s furious reprimand.

Han shi had actually stepped out from the cold palace. She really couldn’t wait any longer, could she?

Behind her followed a troop of imperial guards. Ever since Han Ye was removed from his position as Deputy Commander of the imperial guards, the one who took over was Han Fu, a collateral descendant of the Han Family. However, due to the favor of Old Master Han, his status was nearly on par with that of the main branch.

Han shi turned to Deputy Commander Han and ordered coldly, “What are you waiting for? Hurry and enter to protect His Majesty!”

“Yes!” Deputy Commander Han acknowledged the command, then led a large force of imperial guards into the side hall, surrounding Gu Chengfeng and the two opposing Emperors.

Han shi strolled forward with a smirk, glancing first at Gu Jiao before shifting her gaze toward Gu Chengfeng inside the hall. “Did you truly believe that I wouldn’t recognize my own son?”

As she spoke, her eyes fell upon the Emperor, who was dressed in a eunuch’s attire, and the corners of her lips curled upward.

“I was just worrying about not being able to find you, and here you are, walking right into my hands. What a stroke of luck! Xiao Liulang, you have fallen into my trap!”

Gu Chengfeng’s heart sank.

No way——

Did this old witch actually see through his impeccable acting skills?

Then… weren’t they walking straight into a trap today?

Even if they claimed that the one they had was the true Emperor, no one would believe them now——

After all, he was a fake Crown Prince. If he tried to claim that he had brought the real Emperor, who would find that convincing?

It was over. Completely over.

There was no way out for them now!

Han shi took in every detail of Gu Chengfeng’s panic, and she threw her head back in triumphant laughter. “Xiao Liulang, oh, Xiao Liulang, you are still too inexperienced to challenge me! Today, none of you will leave here alive!”

Gu Jiao tilted her head slightly and crossed her arms as she calmly looked at Han shi. “Are you sure? Maybe you should turn around and check.”
