Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
The chances of surviving this poison were incredibly slim, and among those who did survive, aside from Fifth Master Han, every single one had turned into a death warrior. Whether the poison and the transformation into a death warrior were intrinsically linked remained an unanswered question.
However, while Fifth Master Han did not become a death warrior, he developed progeria, an accelerated aging condition. From this perspective, the poison’s aftereffects were undeniably severe.
The Imperial Advisor said, “This poison is very strange. Most people do not survive it, but those who do become extraordinarily powerful. I refer to it as ‘selection.’”
Gu Jiao frowned slightly. “Selection?”
The Imperial Advisor gave Gu Jiao a deep look and said, “A form of genetic natural selection.”
Gu Jiao was lost in thought, her gaze lowered, and she did not notice the look the Imperial Advisor cast at her.
By the time she raised her eyes to meet his gaze, all traces of emotion had already disappeared from the depths of the Imperial Advisor’s eyes.
“Where does this poison come from?” She asked.
The Imperial Advisor replied, “It is extracted from the rhizome of a certain type of purple herb. However, that herb is now exceedingly rare.”
What a pity. If it still existed, she might have been able to bring some back for research.
Gu Jiao then asked, “Where did you get the poison you gave to Gu Changqing?”
The Imperial Advisor sighed helplessly. “There was only one bottle left, and I used it all on him.”
Another doubt surfaced in Gu Jiao’s heart. “But why haven’t I sensed the aura of a death warrior on him?”
The Imperial Advisor replied, “Because he… didn’t actually become a death warrior.”
Gu Jiao frowned in confusion. “What do you mean?”
The Imperial Advisor gave a polite smile. “It was only after I gave him the medicine that I realized… it was expired.”
Gu Jiao: “…”
“So now he…”
The Imperial Advisor maintained his awkward yet courteous smile. “He believes that he is a death warrior.”
Gu Jiao once again: “…”
To be honest, the Imperial Advisor hadn’t expected things to turn out this way either. He only discovered the medicine had expired the following day, so he hurried over to check on Gu Changqing’s condition.
Unexpectedly, he found Gu Changqing standing by the bedside, propped up on a cane, looking full of energy as he excitedly said, “Imperial Advisor, the medicine you gave me really worked; I can stand again!”
At that moment, the Imperial Advisor’s expression had been one of unparalleled shock and disbelief.
Gu Changqing had asked in confusion, “But why… why didn’t I feel the excruciating pain you mentioned?”
The Imperial Advisor had previously told him that enduring this poison would be no different from experiencing death itself.
Without hesitation, the Imperial Advisor had immediately stopped administering his painkillers.
After suffering through three days of agony worse than death, Gu Changqing became even more convinced that he had survived the ordeal of the deadly poison and believed in it without a shred of doubt.
This was not a miracle of medicine; this was sheer, unrelenting willpower, forged by his determination to protect his younger sister at any cost.
The Imperial Advisor sighed innocently. “Seeing how well he was doing, I didn’t have the heart to expose the truth.”
He feared that if he did, Gu Changqing’s belief would collapse, and he would never recover again.
Gu Jiao looked at the numerous books on the art of death warriors in her hands, utterly bewildered. “Then… what’s with all these books?”
The Imperial Advisor answered honestly, “I made them up.”
Though it had taken quite a bit of effort; just finding enough aged blank booklets and coming up with convincing titles had nearly driven him mad.
Gu Jiao picked up a book titled ‘Become a Qualified Death Warrior in Ten Days’ and twitched at the corner of her mouth. “No wonder these books seemed so… ridiculous.”
The Imperial Advisor: “……”
……
Given Gu Changqing’s current condition, it was naturally best for him to remain at the Imperial Advisor’s Hall for the time being. As for when he should be told the truth, that would depend on how well he recovered. Before he was fully healed, they could not afford to let his belief crumble midway.
By the time Gu Jiao and the Black Wind King left the Imperial Advisor’s Hall, it was already deep into the night. They made their way back to the Duke An Estate.
The estate was quiet and peaceful.
Xiao Heng hadn’t told the family that Gu Jiao had gone to the imperial palace to steal the Emperor. He had simply said that she had some matters to attend to at the Imperial Advisor’s Hall and might not return until the next day.
Everyone had already gone to bed.
Xiao Heng sat alone in his room, waiting for Gu Jiao.
He had no idea how things had unfolded on her end. But according to their plan, the Emperor should have been brought back to the Duke An Estate.
Creak——
The gate of the Maple Courtyard was pushed open.
Xiao Heng immediately stepped out of his room. “Jiao—”
But the person who entered wasn’t Gu Jiao. It was Steward Zheng.
Holding a lantern, Steward Zheng glanced at Xiao Heng, who had hurried out into the corridor, and asked in surprise, “Your Highness, you’re still awake at this hour?”
Xiao Heng quickly concealed his disappointment and calmly asked, “And why are you here so late?”
Steward Zheng pointed toward the courtyard gate behind him and explained, “Ah, I noticed that the door wasn’t closed and thought that perhaps a servant had been careless, so I came in to check.”
Xiao Heng replied, “I told them to leave it open.”
Steward Zheng hesitated for a moment before asking, “But isn’t Lord Xiao and Young Master Gu supposed to return tomorrow?”
After all, they were the only two who had gone out.
Xiao Heng maintained a calm expression as he said, “They might also return earlier than expected. It’s already quite late, Steward Zheng, you should go rest. There’s nothing to worry about here.”
Steward Zheng chuckled and nodded. “Ah, yes, of course. I’ll take my leave then.”
He had barely taken a few steps away when he suddenly turned back and asked, “Your Highness, are you perhaps not used to living here? Lord Duke mentioned that you’re welcome to stay in his courtyard instead. His place is more spacious, while Maple Courtyard is quite crowded…”
Xiao Heng replied seriously, “No, I am quite comfortable staying in Maple Courtyard.”
Steward Zheng gave an awkward smile, though inwardly, he couldn’t help but wonder—why would the esteemed eldest imperial grandson of the Emperor choose to stay with a few people from the State of Zhao instead of lodging with his own maternal uncle?
“Well then, if you need anything, please don’t hesitate to ask.”
This time, Steward Zheng truly left and did not return.
As time slowly passed, Xiao Heng initially managed to sit still, but before long, he stood up. He alternated between glancing out the window and pacing around the room.
Eventually, when he was on the verge of heading to the imperial palace himself to gather information, another noise sounded from outside the courtyard.
Without waiting for anyone to open the door, Xiao Heng strode forward in large, urgent steps and pulled it open with a sharp motion.
And there, standing at the entrance, was Long Yi.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
